During a recent trip with my family to Magnetic Island, Northern Queensland, I got the opportunity to film the White Breasted Sea Eagle catching a small fish.
As is usually the case, the scene takes place around 1km away however, it was the first time I can recall watching a Sea Eagle capture a fish “in the wild”. A classic scene of the hunter being hunted, with the small fish being huddled together by larger fish – which then became the target of our eagle.
After seeing the eagle take a fish naturally, I was motivated to buy a packet of frozen mullet from the local fishing tackle shop and try my luck at bringing the Sea Eagles down by throwing a fish out near their location. This worked so well and I enjoyed filming the birds in much closer proximity.
